Archive for June, 2009

Our shop was temporarily and happily disrupted by a newly married couple of booklovers arriving to have wedding pictures taken in the shop. As instructed by their photographers, bride and groom peered into various volumes while the staff did what they could to avoid the gaze of the cameras. Anyway, we wish them luck and congratualations on their big day.

Other news – the great Alasdair Gray had a wee snooze in the window chair (“excuse me but there’s someone asleep over there”, “it’s fine. that’s Alasdair Gray”, geniuses are allowed!). And my camera does not work with our work pc so the shots I took of the recent poetry reading for refugee week are not up yet, but they are on the way..

Bookfest is getting near too! If you haven’t already, please go to the event tab for details of the events available.

BIG BIG thanks!

No.1 bookshop and no.1 shop overall in the chain (all UK shops)

The financial year for 08/09 is finished and the final figures are in. We are delighted to be able to say that our bookshop is once again the top-earning bookshop in Oxfam UK, and this time round also the top earning shop of any kind of shop in the chain! (Judged by NSC, or net sales contribution)

Of course, this would not be possible without the continued support and generosity of our customers, donors and volunteers. So, once again, a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed in any way to the shop throughout the year. May we continue to make these sums of money in 09/10 to help overcome poverty and suffering.

Thank you all.
